Founded in 1907, Phillips Temple CME Church stands as a beacon of faith in Indianapolis, embodying our enduring motto: “Growing in Faith, Grounded in Grace.” For 117 years, our church has offered a sanctuary for worship and a vibrant community for spiritual growth. Church History
The journey of Phillips Temple began when Rev. John Taylor, a C.M.E. Mission Preacher from Louisville, Kentucky, arrived in Indianapolis with a divine mission to establish a C.M.E. church. The first prayer service took place in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gip Ringo at 702 Fayette Street. The congregation soon grew, necessitating moves to larger spaces, including a rented area in the old Victors Building. In 1992, we moved to our current location at 210 East 34th Street, a historic building that has become a cornerstone of our community’s faith activities.
